Programs and Opportunities


At-Risk-Kindergarten   (ARK)

The At-Risk-Kindergarten Program is designed for students who need additional development in the areas of motor skills, concepts, and language skills.  They are provided with a variety of opportunities to strengthen these skills. Students in the ARK program attend kindergarten at their neighborhood school in the morning before going to the ARK classroom which is housed at Jefferson Elementary School from 12:20 PM to 3:20 PM each school day. Sue Pearson is the instructor working with these youngsters.

Band    

Students in grades 5 and 6 have the opportunity to participate in band. Lessons are given weekly at Roosevelt Elementary. Students work to acheive their own ability level.

Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts    

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts troops meet regularly at Roosevelt Elementary School. Please contact the school office for more information.

Breakfast Program   

Roosevelt School is one of two elementary schools in Watertown to serve breakfast to its students.  Meals are served daily from 8:00-8:30 AM. Families may qualify for free or reduced meals by completing an application form.

Common Sense Parenting    

Common Sense Parenting classes offer logical, sensible techniques and skills for parents to improve their relationship with their children in a respectful way. The classes meet for 6 weeks allowing parents the opportunity to try out new skills they have learned. For more information, contact Roosevelt School. Childcare is provided for the children of parents  who are enrolled in this course.

DARE   (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)

The DARE Program is presented to our sixth graders by an officer from the Watertown Police Department. Project DARE is a seventeen week program designed to prevent drug abuse in young people and to promote understanding concerning their present and future roles as productive members of our community.  DARE is about “being all you can be, and doing it while being drug and violence free.”

District Preschool   

Watertown School District Handicap Preschool is currently housed at Garfield Elementary and McKinley elementary for all eligible 4 year old children. Handicap Preschool serves the entire Watertown community and assists with helping children who have a wide range of disabilities. Many of the children serviced through this program need assistance with speech and/or physical handicaps. Mrs. Donna Howard, Handicap Preschool teacher, and Mrs. Cheryl Knudson, Handicap Speech Therapist, are in charge of the program. English as a Second Language  (ESL)

The Watertown School District employs an ESL instructor who is available to assist Watertown Public School students who have limited proficiency in English.

Field Day   

Fifth and sixth grade students have the opportunity to participate in a district wide track and field competition during the last week of school. Each student may select three events. Students prepare for this meet during their track unit in physical education class.

Fit for Life   

The Roosevelt Fit for Life program is an opportunity for children, parents, and staff to live a healthy lifestyle. A monthly calendar is filled out by individuals who participate in this program indicating the types of physical fitness activities they have done throughout the month. As points are totaled, participants have the chance to earn Fit for Life clothing as well as other prizes sponsored by the Roosevelt PTO. Foster Grandparents   

Roosevelt participates in the Foster Grandparent Program. Our Foster Grandparent Volunteers work daily from 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon assisting in classrooms. They work with children on reading, language arts, or math skills either individually or in a small group setting. We appreciate our Foster Grandparents and thank them for sharing their talents with our students. If you would like to be a Foster Grandparent Volunteer, please contact the Watertown Volunteer Center at 886-5270.

GIFT Program   

We have a unique GIFT to offer our third through sixth grade students here at Roosevelt. After school, students have the opportunity to take their homework to the library and Get It Finished Today! This homework room runs from 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Sessions are held Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. A snack break is also provided during this time.

Girls and Boys Basketball

The sixth grade basketball program is sponsored by the school district for boys and girls alike. Students practice and play games after school. These programs emphasize the development of beginning ball handling skills. 

Girls Volleyball

Girls in 6th grade can participate in Girl's Volleyball. Practices will be held at Roosevelt Elementary School. Working with these girls is their coach Mrs. Tressa Weide.

HOSTS Program  

HOSTS (Help One Student To Succeed) is a new program that is being put into place at Roosevelt School this year. This program is designed to assist students in readiness, reading, writing, vocabulary, thinking, and study skills. HOSTS is an instructional strategy that is integrated into our current school curriculum. Mentors are assigned to identified students to reinforce the classroom teacher’s instruction.

Kidscope After School Care

The Kidscope After School Care Program provides nutritional snacks, homework help, and learning activities each school day from 3:20 PM to 6:00 PM.

Kidscope Summer Program

Jefferson Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Mellette Elementary AND/OR Roosevelt Elementary host the Kidscope Summer Program which is run by the Boys’ and Girl’s Club.  Kidscope is a childcare program that plans and supervises a variety of fun, learning activities and field trips.  Enrichment opportunities such as guitar lessons, computer lessons, food classes, and Spanish lessons are also offered.  The summer program is open from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM during the summer.  For more information, please contact the Boys’ and Girls’ Club at  886-6666.

Learning Center

Roosevelt Elementary has three full time special education teachers to meet the needs of all students. These instructors are Mrs. Karen Roe, Nancy Hirsch and Marilyn Chambers. Please contact these ladies if you have any questions about their program.

Occupational Therapy   

The Watertown School District employs an occupational therapist who is available to work with elementary special education and classroom teachers on setting up programs for children with occupational therapy needs.

Orchestra  

Students in grades 5 and 6 are eligible to participate in orchestra. Lessons are given once each week at Roosevelt Elementary. Students have the opportunity to advance at their ability level.

Parent Teacher Organization  

Roosevelt School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is an active group of parents who work hard to provide parental involvement in our school. The PTO meets monthly to plan for family school activities and to act as a sounding board for parents. Parental involvement is the true key to a child's success in school. 

Our PTO officers include:  Jerry Cleveland, President; Sarah Hansen, Vice President, Mary Henning, Treasurer; and Kristi Herting, Secretary.

Roosevelt Safety Patrol (For our 5th and 6th grade students)

The patrol's job is to remind students of safety rules learned in the classroom and to guide them in safe crossing and bus procedures.  Patrols receive instructions in guidelines and procedures during their training and regular patrol meetings.  Duties of all patrols are:

  • Set  a good example and encourage other students to also observe safety rules at all times.

  • Report for duty on time with proper equipment.

  • Know and help enforce "fairly" all walking or bus stop rules and regulations.

  • Report to the patrol sponsor, administrators, and staff members as needed.

  • Provide other assistance to crossing guards as requested.

  • Attend and participate in all patrol meetings and training sessions.

Patrols are to be at their posts before the student flow begins, and are to remain at their posts until all students have been safely helped across the street.  Possible Patrol Times include 8:00 am - 8:25 am and 3:15 pm - 3:30 pm.

RS & VP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program)

The RS&VP program is a chance for retired senior citizens to volunteer to assist students as they work to improve reading, math and/or language arts skills. RS&VP volunteers can choose the days and amount of time they wish to spend helping students.  If you would like to be a RS&VP volunteer, please contact the Watertown Volunteer Center at 886-5270.

SAFE  (Student Assistance for Education)

Roosevelt Elementary has a guidance counselor, Mrs. Lisa Fox-Boschee, in the building for 2 1/2 days per week.  Mrs. Fox-Boschee visits each classroom to present lessons that are preventative in nature.  Some of the topics that are covered include peer relationships and conflict resolution. She also meets individually with students and/or families who are experiencing difficulties.

Speech Therapy

Our speech therapist, Mrs. Kristi Busskohl, is on staff at Roosevelt School. She meets with students on an individual and group basis to develop proper speech skills.

Student Advisory

Roosevelt Elementary School is proud to sponsor a student advisory group made up of children in grades fourth - sixth. Classroom representatives are elected at the beginning of each school year. These students assist with special projects during the school year as well as discuss current issues that come up throughout the school year.

Student Assistance Program

Roosevelt School has a student assistance team that is available to assist at-risk students who are experiencing difficulties in the areas of academics, attendance, health or behavior.  The Student Assistance Program is a confidential place to turn for help and support.  For more information contact Mr. Stacey.

Summer Reading Program

Our school library is open two days a week throughout the summer. Students who reach their summer reading goal are invited to attend a pool party held at the outdoor pool in Watertown.

 

Tackle Football 

For all interested 4th and 6th grade students offered through the Boys and Girls Club in Watertown.  This program runs from August through October.  Practice is Tuesdays and Thursdays with games played Saturday mornings.

 

Wrestling

   Wrestling is a district sponsored program for students in grades 3-6 during the month of February. The students practice at the school and finish the season with a citywide tournament at the Senior High.
